Sky Adventures is located just outside the town of La Fortuna, in the Arenal region, close to the volcano and surrounded by rainforest.

This makes it incredibly easy to slot into almost any Costa Rica itinerary, whether you’re following a classic route or travelling more slowly as part of a family gap year.

We drove ourselves in a hire car, which was straightforward thanks to the fully paved roads linking La Fortuna to San José and other popular destinations. But if you’re not driving, most hotels can arrange shuttles or transfers directly to Sky Adventures.

What we liked straight away was that it felt like a proper purpose-built adventure park, not a single activity squeezed into the jungle. Everything runs from one base, which makes the logistics far easier with kids.

The hiking trails here were more interesting than we expected.

These aren’t just short connector paths — they’re genuine rainforest trails that take you deep into the jungle, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and unusual plants.

What the trails are like

  • Several routes with different lengths
  • Uneven ground in places
  • Short but steep sections
  • Hot and humid, even in the shade

We saw colourful birds, interesting insects, and some impressive plant life, and there are small waterfalls along certain routes. We didn’t see any mammals here – it’s NOT a national park, and given the number of visitors it’s not surprising that they might be hiding away.

That said, this isn’t an easy pushchair-friendly walk. Our youngest started flagging on the longer trail (he was just hot, sweaty and exhausted by about half way), so we split up — one adult took a shorter loop while the other continued. That flexibility made the day much more enjoyable for everyone (and really put a cap on the level of moaning!).

Ziplining at Sky Adventures Arenal

Ziplining is the main reason many families come here — and it’s easy to see why.

Sky Adventures Arenal has 7 ziplines, with the longest stretching an impressive 800 metres over the rainforest canopy.

  • You take the Sky Tram to the top, so there’s no long hike to the first platform
  • The ziplines use a built-in braking system, rather than gloves
  • Stunning views of Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal, and the canyons below

Not having to worry about braking can make a huge difference for nervous kids (and adults!).

  • Minimum age: 5 years
  • Minimum height: 110cm

If ziplining is the only thing you care about, we personally preferred the experience at Arenal Mundo Aventura, which has more lines (12 instead of 7). But Sky Adventures wins on scenery, ease, and the ability to combine activities.

Hanging Bridges at Sky Adventures

We expected the hanging bridges to be scenic.

We did not expect them to be quite so wobbly.

There are several hanging bridges along the trails, offering spectacular views over the rainforest and out across Lake Arenal. But they sway — a lot more than we anticipated. I don’t remember reading that in any of the tourist guide books before our trip!

One of our kids froze halfway across the longest bridge, gripping the ropes while the bridge bounced gently underneath. At the other end of the spectrum, our other child couldn’t get enough of wobbling the bridges as much as possible with delight. It took patience (and a bit of humour) to get everyone across.

Why they’re still worth it

  • Incredible views of the rainforest canopy
  • A great way to understand the different forest layers
  • A genuine sense of adventure for older kids

If you’ve done hanging bridges elsewhere in Costa Rica, these felt longer and more exposed than most, which makes them memorable — but possibly intimidating for nervous children.

The Sky Tram Experience

The Sky Tram is short, but it ended up being one of our favourite parts of the day.

As you slowly glide up through the rainforest canopy, guides point out plants, birds, and animals you’d otherwise walk straight past.

Why it stood out for us

  • The guides were fantastic with kids — informative and engaging
  • Ours even took us on a short walk at the top to spot a resident eyelash pit viper
  • Great photo opportunities, including a giant hand sculpture overlooking the forest

For families with younger kids, or anyone who needs a break from adrenaline, the Sky Tram is a brilliant way to experience the rainforest without the effort.

Café and Gift Shop

After a hot, sweaty morning of hiking and ziplining, the café was very welcome.

It’s a lovely place to grab a cold drink, sit down, and take in the views over Lake Arenal while everyone decompresses. There’s a huge decked area that means that most of the tables come with a view. We didn’t feel rushed, and it was a nice way to round off the experience before heading back to La Fortuna.
