We spent several weeks travelling through Costa Rica on our family gap year, and honestly? It was bucket-list stuff. Volcanoes. Waterfalls. Cloud forests. White-sand beaches. Wildlife everywhere you turn. It’s a small country, which means you can pack so much into a short amount of time—perfect for families trying to make the most of precious holiday days.

When we visited with our boys as part of our family gap year, we wanted a mix of fun, education, and adventure—and Costa Rica delivered on every single front.
Here’s why families LOVE Costa Rica.
🌿 Wildlife Everywhere (and Easy to Spot)
Costa Rica has the highest density of biodiversity on the planet, and so much of it is incredibly accessible. You don’t need long hikes or expert guides to see sloths, monkeys, iguanas, toucans, frogs, and everything in between.
On just one sloth tour in La Fortuna, we saw 13 sloths in an hour, including a baby. Our guide Armando had us spotting creatures we never would’ve noticed on our own.

From the calm waves at Playa Conchal to the perfect white sand at Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica’s beaches are wonderful for swimming, playing, and exploring. Add in beach shacks, smoothies, and the odd iguana sunbathing next to you, and it’s pretty much kid heaven.

Is Costa Rica Safe for Families? (Honest Parent Review)
Before our trip, I was worried about all the typical parent things — wildlife encounters, road safety, the heat, food hygiene. Within 48 hours, those fears eased. Costa Rica is one of the safest, most family-friendly places we’ve travelled with kids.
What Parents Need to Know About Safety in Costa Rica
- Wildlife is everywhere—and magical—but kids should learn not to shout, run, or feed animals.
- Roads often have no pavements; keep little ones close when walking around towns or along rural stretches.
- Sun exposure is no joke. You’ll need high-factor sunscreen (it’s pricey locally, so bring plenty!) and lots of water.
- Food safety is good. We found restaurants, sodas (local eateries), and supermarkets all clean and straightforward.
- Locals love children. Nearly everywhere we went, people went out of their way to help or chat to the boys.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Costa Rica With Kids?
Costa Rica is a year-round destination, but the experience changes depending on the season. We visited in November/early December — peak “shoulder season” — and for us, it was ideal. We had plenty of sunshine, lush green landscapes, and only the occasional dramatic downpour (which honestly became part of the fun).
Dry Season (December–April)
- Sunny, dry days — ideal for beaches, hiking, volcano views.
- Lower humidity.
- Peak tourist season → higher prices + more crowds.
- Perfect if you want maximum sunshine and minimal rain.
Green Season (May–November)
- More rain (especially September–October).
- Lush, vibrant landscapes.
- Fewer crowds and better prices.
- Excellent wildlife spotting conditions.
A Note on the Caribbean Coast
The Caribbean side has less predictable seasons and sees rainfall year-round — but also has beautiful beaches, calmer crowds, and a more relaxed vibe.
Temperature
Expect warm weather year-round: 70–85°F (21–29°C).
School Holidays & Peak Times
Christmas holidays are very busy. Prices surge and popular parks like Manuel Antonio can feel crowded, so book early if travelling at this time.

Best family friendly destinations in Costa Rica
One of the biggest surprises from our trip was that almost everywhere in Costa Rica is family-friendly. Mountains? Family-friendly. Cloud forests? Family-friendly. Beach towns? Extremely family-friendly. Even the “off-the-beaten-path” spots ended up being some of our favourite places with the boys.
Below are the destinations we loved most while travelling Costa Rica with kids — places that combine nature, wildlife, beaches, and that magical Pura Vida atmosphere.
La Fortuna: Volcano views, Adventure and Hot Springs
On our first morning in La Fortuna, we opened the curtains and the boys gasped — the Arenal Volcano was right there, perfectly framed like a giant painting. This town quickly became one of our favourite family stops thanks to the sheer number of activities packed into one place.
La Fortuna is an easy 2–3 hour drive from San José (or a smooth shuttle/bus ride). It’s walkable, full of great restaurants, and ideal for adventure-loving families.
Top Things to Do in La Fortuna With Kids
• Hike the Arenal Volcano Trails
There are plenty of family-friendly hikes with volcano viewpoints, lava fields, and rainforest scenery.
• Zipline Through the Rainforest
Costa Rica is the place to try ziplining, and La Fortuna has some of the best family-friendly courses.
• Explore Hanging Bridges & the Sky Tram
Perfect for kids of all ages — you can choose gentle walking or take the Sky Tram for big views with little legs.
• Relax in the Hot Springs
From natural river hot springs (free!) to beautiful hotel resorts, this is the perfect way to unwind after adventures.
• Go on a Sloth-Spotting Tour
One of our absolute favourite activities in all of Costa Rica. We spotted 13 sloths in an hour, including a baby, plus monkeys, insects, and even a huge yellow rat snake.

Manuel Antonio: Beaches, Wildlife and Easy Trails
This is one of Costa Rica’s most visited destinations, and for good reason: pristine white sand beaches backed by lush jungle and some of the easiest wildlife spotting in the country. Our boys still talk about the HUNDREDS of hermit crabs we saw on the beach here.

- Flat, well-maintained trails (great for little legs)
- Beautiful beaches perfect for swimming
- Regular sightings of monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and birds

Tamarindo: Surfing, Sunshine and Easy Beach Days
Tamarindo is where we finally embraced the “slow travel” vibe. After days of hiking and wildlife spotting, this beach town was the perfect place to unwind — though surfing kept us far from bored.
Why Tamarindo Is Great for Kids

- Endless sandy beaches
- Ice cream shops, smoothie bars, and great family restaurants
- A good base for turtle-watching tours
And just 15 minutes north lies Playa Conchal, one of the most stunning beaches in Costa Rica — think turquoise water and shimmering shell sand.

Cahuita: Caribbean Vibes, Easy Hikes and Beautiful Beaches
The Caribbean Coast is often overlooked on Costa Rica itineraries but offers it’s own slice of paradise.
Cahuita completely charmed us. The national park offers gentle, beautiful hikes with loads of wildlife. Then you’ve got calm beaches, excellent Caribbean food, and a relaxed local feel that’s perfect for families.

- Black and white sand beaches
- Calm water (depending on the day)
- Lifeguards at Playa Negra and other beaches along this coast
- Affordable food + accommodation
- Great buses connecting the coastal towns
It’s ideal for slow, simple days with kids.
Cabuya: A hidden gem for nature-loving families
Cabuya is a quiet village at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula — and one of our favourite “secret” finds. Listening to howler monkeys at sunrise, watching scarlet macaws fly overhead, and wandering empty beaches felt like a dream.
Family-Friendly Things to Do in Cabuya
• Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve
Costa Rica’s first national park, with trails suitable for older kids. We did the longer hike and saw loads of wildlife, ending at a pristine deserted beach.

• Bioluminescent Swimming
The Nicoya Peninsula is one of the best places in Costa Rica to swim in natural bioluminescence — a glowing, unforgettable bucket-list moment.

Top Family Activities in Costa Rica
We packed a lot into our several weeks in Costa Rica — and honestly? I’d do it all again. From ziplining through rainforest canopies to watching tiny turtle hatchlings scramble toward the ocean, these are the activities that made our trip unforgettable.
If you’re planning Costa Rica travel with kids, these are the experiences you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
Ziplining (A Must for Adventure-Loving Families)
Nothing beats the moment your child steps off their first platform and whizzes into the trees. Ours were nervous for approximately five seconds… then spent the rest of the time shouting, “FASTER! HIGHER!” as they zoomed above the canopy.
Costa Rica is the original zipline destination, and you’ll find kid-friendly options in La Fortuna, Monteverde, and beyond. Course lengths and heights vary, so you can choose based on your children’s confidence levels.

Hiking Costa Rica’s National Parks
Every national park we visited was packed with wildlife. Manuel Antonio gets the fame (and the crowds), but we were blown away by the lesser-known parks like Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve.
Why these hikes are great for kids:
- Short, manageable trails
- Lots of shade
- High chance of spotting monkeys, iguanas, birds, frogs, and sometimes snakes
- Educational without feeling like education
Our boys loved being wildlife detectives — scanning the canopy and spotting animals before we did.
Seeing Nesting Turtles
This was one of the most magical things we’ve ever experienced as a family. Watching a mother turtle heave herself up the sand to lay her eggs, or seeing hatchlings emerge and race toward the waves, is something your children will remember forever.

- Tortuguero
- Ostional
Always choose ethical, certified tours that protect both turtles and nesting grounds.

Swimming in Bioluminescence
If you’ve never seen bioluminescent water before, imagine this: as you swim, glowing sparkles swirl around your hands and feet like fairy dust. Our boys could not believe their eyes.
The southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula is the best place in Costa Rica to swim in natural bioluminescence — and it’s absolutely worth making room for in your itinerary.

Sloth Tours (Our #1 Favourite Activity)
We still talk about our sloth tour in La Fortuna. Our guide, Armando, was incredible with the kids, making every sighting exciting and explaining the jungle ecosystem in a way they understood.
In just one hour, we saw:
- 13 sloths
- A huge yellow rat snake
- Several iguanas
- Stick insects
- Colourful birds
This was hands-down one of the most educational and fun activities of our entire trip.

Hanging Bridges
If the idea of ziplining is a bit too much (or your kids are very young), hanging bridges offer a gentler way to experience the rainforest canopy.
Kids love walking high above the trees listening to jungle sounds, looking at flowers, spotting insects, and seeing the forest change at different heights.

Jaguar Rescue Centre (Puerto Viejo)
Despite the name, you won’t see jaguars here — but you will learn a huge amount about animal rehabilitation in Costa Rica.
The guides are fantastic with children and explain the stories of each animal with warmth and passion. You’ll likely see:
- Monkeys
- Birds
- Sloths
- Reptiles
- Small mammals
It’s a brilliant educational stop on the Caribbean coast.

Whitewater Rafting (Ages 6+)
If your kids are slightly older, whitewater rafting is an adrenaline-packed highlight. We did ours in Sarapiquí, and it was one of the boys’ favourite days of the entire trip.
The rapids range from gentle to thrilling, so choose based on your comfort level.

Chocolate Tours
Chocolate tours were an unexpected hit with our kids. They loved learning how cocoa grows, how chocolate is traditionally made, and—of course—tasting everything.
It’s a perfect worldschooling activity and great for a rainy afternoon.

Best places to stay in Costa Rica with kids
We always knew we wanted to spend a good amount of time exploring Costa Rica. My main worry was that there was no way we could afford it. It’s definitely not the cheapest country to visit but I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of affordable accommodation we managed to find. Including some real gems!
If you’re happy to stay in budget places you can do this for around £60 (US$77.50) per night. For this you’ll get a family room, usually with its own bathroom, in a small hotel with minimal facilities. Obviously there are a TON of higher-end options too if you have the cash to splash! We focused on pumping our budget into the activities we wanted to do. This meant we opted for more budget places to stay.

How much does a family trip to Costa Rica cost?
I’m not going to lie — planning a Costa Rica family travel budget was one of the hardest parts for me before our trip. Costa Rica isn’t a “cheap” destination, but it can be excellent value because of the incredible experiences you can fit into one holiday.
After several weeks in the country, here’s exactly what we learned about budgeting for Costa Rica travel with kids.
Accommodation Costs in Costa Rica
You can absolutely visit Costa Rica on a budget, especially if you choose smaller family-run hotels or eco-lodges and prioritise activities over luxury.
Typical Family Accommodation Prices
- Budget stays: £60–70 (US$77.50–90) per night
- Mid-range stays: £90–100 (US$115–130) per night
- Luxury stays: £150+ (US$190+) per night
We personally chose to spend less on accommodation so we could spend more on activities. But we still found some real gems at affordable prices across the country.
Food & Eating Out
Food was one of the biggest surprises — Costa Rica can be expensive to eat out with kids, especially in tourist towns.

- Budget/local soda: £50–60 (US$65–77)
- Mid-range restaurant: £75–100 (US$97–130)
Money-Saving Tips
- Cook at your accommodation when possible
- Choose sodas (local restaurants) for affordable, delicious meals
- Stock up on snacks and fruit at supermarkets
- Embrace the classic Costa Rican casado (tasty + budget-friendly)
We self-catered a lot and it saved us a huge amount over five weeks.

Getting around Costa Rica is where costs can climb quickly — but also where smart choices can save a lot.
Car Hire
- 1 week small SUV: £400–500/US$530-665
Renting a car gave us flexibility and actually worked out cheaper than taking multiple long shuttles.
Shared Shuttles
- £100–250/US$133-330 per journey for a family of four
- Costs depend heavily on distance
Long-Distance Buses
- £30–40/US$40-53 for a family of four (for journeys of around 4 hours)
- Comfortable, cheap, and great for budget-focused families

After several weeks travelling across Costa Rica with our kids, we picked up quite a few practical tips that made our days run smoother — and helped us avoid some classic parent pitfalls (sunburn, dehydration, and overpacking among them!).
Here’s everything you should know before you go.
Safety Tips for Kids
Costa Rica is incredibly family-friendly, but there are a few key safety points worth keeping in mind:
- Bring plenty of high-factor sunscreen. It’s very expensive in Costa Rica, and the sun is strong.
- Hydrate constantly. If you’re hiking or exploring national parks, the heat + humidity can sneak up on kids quickly.
- Teach kids not to run or shout around wildlife. It scares the animals and reduces everyone’s chances of spotting anything.
- Never feed wildlife. It’s harmful to animals and illegal in many areas.
- Stay close on roads. Many rural roads have no pavements; keep younger kids firmly on the inside when walking.
- Watch ocean conditions. Some beaches have strong currents — always check for flags or ask locals.
Costa Rica feels safe because it is safe — but a little awareness goes a long way.
