Best places to stay in Phu Quoc for families

If you’re planning a family trip to Vietnam and wondering where the best places to stay in Phu Quoc are, the answer really depends on what kind of island experience you want.

During our stay, we based ourselves in Duong Dong, the main town and heart of Phu Quoc. It turned out to be the perfect base for a family — easy beach access, plenty of restaurants where even our pickiest eater found something to love, and a relaxed mix of local life and traveler comforts.

While there are quieter corners of the island (like Ong Lang and Ganh Dau), we found Duong Dong ideal for families who want to explore without feeling isolated. In this guide, I’ll share why Duong Dong worked so well for us, plus our honest thoughts on the best hotels and family-friendly places to stay based on our first-hand experience.

🗺️ Where is Phu Quoc?

Phu Quoc is a large-ish island off the coast of Cambodia, but officially part of Vietnam. It’s a big tourist destination in Asia and is geared up for holidaymakers. It has long stretches of beautiful white sand beach and generally calm seas. 

Phu Quoc is only a short ferry ride from Ha Tien in Vietnam. It also has an international airport with connecting flights across the region (including several a day to Ho Chi Minh City).

🏖️ Is Phu Quoc worth visiting?

Phu Quoc is a great destination if you’re looking for chilled out beach life, lots of family-friendly activities and amazing Vietnamese food. There are long stretches of white sand beachfront, backed up with lots of little hotels and restaurants. But it’s also got a whole heap of day trip activities for families, including the amazing Aquatopia Water Park (read our full review here) and the Vinpearl Safari Park (click here for the full review). 

It is pretty touristy, especially in peak season (January-May). The main stretch of hotels and restaurants that runs from Duong Dong southwards along the coast is a long line of hotels, cafes, little shops, massage places and restaurants. But it’s not overwhelmingly packed with tourists. And if you venture off down the unpaved back streets you’ll find lots of little spots that are full of charm!

🏖️ Why Duong Dong Is Great for Families

When we first started looking for where to stay in Phu Quoc, we wanted somewhere that struck the right balance — close enough to restaurants and the beach, but not so busy that we’d feel overwhelmed. After trying a few different parts of the island on day trips, we realised Duong Dong was exactly what we needed.

It’s the island’s main hub, so everything you might need as a family is within easy reach: supermarkets for snacks and sunscreen, ATMs, beachside cafés, and plenty of restaurants that welcome kids without a second glance. We loved how simple it was to walk from our hotel straight to the sand — no long transfers or secluded resorts to navigate.

Even though it’s busier than other parts of the island, it never felt too hectic. The kids could run along Long Beach while we grabbed a smoothie from a nearby stall, and there were always other families around — a small but comforting reassurance when you’re travelling with children.

The only downside? Because it’s the most popular area, prices for beachfront stays can be higher than elsewhere. But if convenience, comfort, and kid-friendly dining are priorities, Duong Dong really is the easiest and most practical base for families visiting Phu Quoc.

🏨 Best hotels for families in Duong Dong

Best budget option for families: Hotel Duong Dong

This was the place we stayed at for the majority of our time on Phu Quoc. It’s up a little hill just off the main road from Duong Dong so it’s well-connected to the action (about a 15-20min walk to the beach or a VERY cheap Grab taxi) but really, really lovely and quiet. The whole place was only built in 2022 so it’s all very modern and has a fresh feel about it. 

We had a family room, which had one kingsize bed and a double bed in the living area. The bathroom felt brand new and the shower was properly reliable and hot! Whilst it was a little on the cramped side (due to the bed in the living area being out) it was completely fine for us and really good value. If you do want a bit more space then they also offer two-bed family apartments (which means you get to keep the living area for chilling out in!).

Importantly for us (on a budget!) it also had a very small kitchen. This meant we could have breakfast and some dinners at home. Whilst it is very affordable to eat out in Phu Quoc it is nice sometimes to just chill at home too. Our kitchen unit had a fridge, a countertop stove, sink and all the basic cutlery/crockery you need for an extended stay.

Best of all here though is the lovely little pool – big enough to actually swim lengths in but also lots of fun for the kids. We all spent loads of time in here chilling out, and cooling off after a hard day of exploring the island!

The staff are fab and will go out of their way to look after you.

During our stay we paid £21 a night for the family room for four people. A bargain for such a lovely little spot with a pool!

Best luxury option: Lahana Resort & Spa

If you’ve got the budget to spend, then this bit of luxury is the place for you. Set back in the hills but in easy reach of Duong Dong and the beaches, this is a real slice of paradise.

The resort has thatched bungalows spread across it’s gorgeous lush green landscape. The family rooms have loads of space, including a balcony/terrace with loungers. And then there’s THAT pool. We spent hours hanging out here – plenty of space for the kids to play but also really long so fab for ACTUALLY swimming too.

They run yoga classes, there’s a kids club, a fitness centre, spa and a restaurant on site. Plus, if little legs get tired, there’s even a little shuttle cart that will run you up the hill to the pool!

If you’re looking for a full-on family resort getaway, then this is definitely one of the best places to stay in Phu Quoc with kids.

Best for a yoga retreat: An Nhien Retreat

Just off a little side street (on the same road that leads up to Duong Dong Hotel), this is a little gem if you want somewhere to chill out. The wooden bungalow rooms are set in beautiful greenery around a shady swimming pool. There’s a decent restaurant attached if you want to eat-in (particularly good for breakfast). 

Plus there’s a great, cheap little laundry right across the road. And a supermarket just a couple of minutes walk away. Which is always super helpful when you’re travelling with kids.

The main draw for this place though are the daily yoga classes that are run from the outdoor studio on site. The yoga teachers are excellent and all the equipment is well-maintained and feels brand new (not often the case in SE Asia!). 

I did yoga pretty much every day here during our stay. It’s a fab way to start the day with a good stretch, surrounded by the lovely greenery.

The rooms here are around £25 per night for a double bungalow (so £50 a night for a family of four). They do though also offer rates that includes all yoga classes, so if this is your thing, then give them a call in advance to grab yourself a deal.

Best for a seafront stay: Vida Loca Sunset Beach Resort

If you’re dreaming of waking up and stepping straight outside on to the sand then this is the place for you. We loved hanging out in the beachfront restaurant with a cocktail or a smoothie, watching the boys play happily in the surf. 

The rooms here are all set around an interior garden area so it feel really leafy and green. The pool here is AMAZING – it’s an infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. A real treat for cooling off in!

They have a whole stack of kids toys and games in the beach bar that kept our two entertained for hours. There’s hammocks, sunloungers and the classic SE Asia swing out across the sand for perfect sunset photo opps.

Sitting on the beach with a cocktail in your hand, watching the kids swinging backwards and forwards on the beach swing – this is the stuff of family travel dreams.

This is great value for a family stay right on the beach – we paid £65 a night for a quadruple room for the four of us. This had two big double beds, outside patio and private bathroom. But for the beachfront location this is still a real steal!

Best hostel stay: Phu House Hostel

This is a standout budget place just for the grandeur of the building it’s located in. It really is stunning – it’s a beautiful beamed interior that opens up on to an inner courtyard that the bedrooms open up on to. 

The staff are great and offer a whole heap of advice on booking tours and activities on Phu Quoc. 

A single bed in a dorm will set you back just £16 a night here. If you’re travelling as a family you can book in to a private room for four for c.£40 a night. This is where in many parts of SE Asia hostels are actually not the best value for money for families – our stay at Hotel Duong Dong was much cheaper.

We didn’t stay here, but we did spend time hanging out at Phu House Hostel as they run a heap of activities and tours. It was a great find for booking on to these, especially from a budget travel perspective.

🍜 What are the best places to eat in Phu Quoc?

The food in Phu Quoc – and in Vietnam in general – is absolutely incredible. In fact it was one of the big reasons we included Vietnam in our travel plans! Phu Quoc is absolutely packed with restaurants of all different shapes and sizes. 

There are loads of food stalls dotted along the main road South from Duong Dong. Some of the pho soups and Banh Mi were the best we had in Vietnam! And these spots are incredibly good value – we paid around £6 for chicken pho plus drinks for all four of us. 

If you want a full sit-down meal there’s also plenty of options – obviously there are many, many places offering Vietnamese food but there’s also burger joints, seafood restaurants, pizza places and pretty much anything you’re after. 

One place we didn’t eat was at the Night Market – we’d heard some very mixed reviews about the food hygiene so swerved this one and stuck to the places more popular with locals.

When you’re planning where to stay in Phu Quoc, bear in mind that all the places I’ve highlighted in the food post are easy to get to on foot (or in a cheap Grab taxi) from any of the hotels we’ve recommended.

🛥️ Our favourite things to do in Phu Quoc

Whilst you can spend endless days chilling out on the beach and swimming in the calm seas on Phu Quoc, there’s plenty of other adventures to be had too. 

We rated Aquatopia Water Park Phu Quoc as our TOP waterpark in South East Asia. And we also loved our day our at Vinpearl Phu Quoc Safari Park.

One of the absolute BEST things we did during our stay was our Vietnamese Cooking Class with Troc. This is run at the Phu House Hostel and really is such a brilliant way to spend a morning or afternoon. Troc’s classes are incredibly engaging and a real education in how to cook several classic Vietnamese dishes.

We got to make spring rolls, Vietnamese pancakes, Bun Cha noodles, caramelised park and fish and fried banana cake. Troc was amazing at getting the kids involved and keeping them interested throughout the session. Plus there’s the added bonus that you get to eat everything you make – we had so much that it fed us for the next day too!

🌴 Family-Friendly tips for staying in Duong Dong

• Stay near the middle stretch of Long Beach to be close to shops and restaurants.
• Cross roads carefully — traffic can surprise you at first.
• Many hotels include free bikes or motorbike rentals; perfect for exploring nearby cafés.

Final thoughts

After visiting Phu Quoc with our kids, Duong Dong truly felt like the island’s sweet spot. It had everything we needed — calm beaches, affordable food, easy access to attractions, and a touch of local charm.

If we returned to Phu Quoc, we’d stay here again in a heartbeat. Below are the hotels we either stayed in or would confidently book next time, based on family-friendly amenities, space, and value.
